New Vaccine Helps Overcome Polio Cases

Researchers have developed a new vaccine that is capable of overcoming the plague, if the virus accidentally escaped from the pharmaceutical plant. Only 74 cases of polio reported worldwide last year. Public health officials expect the disease causes paralysis was completely eradicated. To make sure there will not be another outbreak, the goal is to continue to provide the vaccine to every child.

But the virus that causes polio is maintained in biocontainment facilities where the virus was processed into an inactive form which is a seed for the vaccine. And there is a small possibility that the virus was able to escape and infiltrate into the general population.

But now, a second-generation vaccine that was developed by a team of researchers led by the Netherlands, will eliminate the risk of polio outbreaks caused by a virus that escapes. In the journal PLoS Pathogens, researchers report the development of a vaccine to cold temperature adjustment thus making it unable to multiply in the human body.

This type of virus that is used to create a new vaccine virus is engineered such that it can only grow at temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. It was much colder than normal human body temperature of 37 degrees C. Researchers say, beyond the threat of an outbreak, the current injectable vaccine spplies are inadequate, and anyway the cost of production is quite expensive.

But the researchers noted that the vaccine is adapted to cold temperatures could ultimately be cheaper cost of production and more doses could be produced. "So, it would be nice if we could produce it in many countries around the world. And for such a purpose, we really need a virus that is more secure, not so ferociously, and does not cause disease," he explained. A number of countries with active pharmaceutical industries such as India, can enter the market, making a large number of polio vaccine at an affordable cost.
